Numerous activities take place on the Nile River, including white water rafting, bungee jumping, kayaking, boat rides and fishing. The river has contributed significantly to the development of Uganda and Egypt, which both depend on it for power generation, fishing and agricultural irrigation.
On the way to the falls, visitors pass sugarcane plantations and village life, where families cultivate subsistence gardens. Water cascades down steep, ridged stones, creating distinctive, soothing sounds.
Jinja and the Boat Cruise
The journey continues to Jinja town for lunch, then proceeds by boat cruise to the source of the Nile. Bird sightings are common during the cruise, making it a highlight for nature lovers.
Lake Victoria
En route to the true source, boats pass over the submerged Ripon Falls at the northern end of Lake Victoria, formerly considered the source of the River Nile. The explorer John Speke was the first European to follow the course of the Nile downstream after reaching the falls that his intuition had marked as the source, in 1862.
